Adios Argentina, Hola Bolivia

Today is border crossing day. We are crossing from La Quiaca, Argentina to Villazon, Bolivia. The scenery and culture has already changed lots since Patagonia. The north of Argentina has more women in traditional Argentinian dress (A knee length skirt, blouse, apron, cardigan, two long braids with beads at the ends, and a wide brimmed hat), the food contains more corn, the markets are full of andean potatoes, and there is more and more llama wool and handwoven tapestry handicrafts. It is also getting colder at night, although the sun is very strong at this altitude during the day, (today we are at 34440m).

We are travelling with a friend we met at Mama Roja now, (did you spot her in the pictures in yesterdays blog?) and it is nice to be three people, all with different favourite things to do and see. The trip will definitely be richer because of it!

  1. Both US Naval Research Laboratory satellite and our satellite show weather below Santa Cruz, Bolivia is good. Sucre, Tarija, Potosi, Potosi and Pto. Suarez regions are fine ahead. Try to avoid further north until the beginning of May. Tropical storm season will end at southern hemisphere by the end of May. Will keep the eye on the weather forecast. Enjoy your journey. 2. Keep meaning to write, sorry I can not access the site from work and forget by the time I get home. Well it sounds a lot more exciting there than here. i have read your stories. Iguacu looks great. Hard to belive that I know someone who went there and it was dry!! this was pre global warming. Very jealous of the places you are going to. i never made it that far south. If you go to Potosi then try and go down the local mines rather than the tourist main one, but be careful they are dangerous. They may not exist any more on the other hand. Looks like the fruit and veg will beat the offerings from the allotment this year, but I will aspire to produce just as good a selection. All the best.
